미국의 일러스트레이터 '버니 푹스'는 어릴 적에 재즈트럼펫 연주자가 꿈이었습니다. 하지만 고등학교 졸업 후 취직한 공장에서 오른쪽 손가락 3개를 잃고 말았습니다.
보상금으로 받은 돈으로 미술대학에 입학하여 그림 공부를 시작했습니다. 졸업 후, 광고와 잡지 등 상업미술을 주로 했으며, 대통령과 연예인 등 유명인사의 초상화도 그렸답니다.
부드러움과 따뜻함의 조화가 잘 어울리는 그의 작품은 스포츠 일러스트가 돋보였는데, 그중에서도 특히 골프 그림이 많은 사랑을 받았답니다.
About Him
Bernard (Bernie) Fuchs’s illustrations have appeared on U.S. postage stamps, magazine covers, and iconic advertisements. The artist also captured five U.S. presidents (John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan) in portraits. Fuchs studied art at Washington University in St. Louis before working as an illustrator for car ads in Detroit in the 1950s. He is most famous for his depictions of American leisure activities, especially sports. Throughout his career, Fuchs created more than 50 covers for Sports Illustrated. Meanwhile, in his prolific painting practice, he often depicted people at the beach or playing tennis, soccer, or football. Horse racing was also a favorite theme for the artist. Saratoga Paddock (1980), an oil-on-canvas depiction of a jockey and horse in a dappled, sunlit area of the racetrack, sold for $11,000 at auction in 1998. In 1975, Fuchs was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, and in 1991 the American Sport Art Museum and Archives named him Sport Artist of the Year.
