John Salminen, Abstract Cityscape painter, American, b. 1945
Urban vistas and John Salminen's mastery of the watercolor technique have earned him international praise. His atmospheric representations of places like New York City, Paris, or San Francisco have a certain fascination that appeals to people everywhere. His works, including October Light, San Francisco, which exhibit superb use of light, color, technique, and movement, vividly capture what it's like to live in a busy metropolis. Salminen is the first American to join the Australian Watercolor Institute and the president of the International Masters of Watercolor Association. He received many honors, including the Gold Medal from the American Watercolor Society. The National Watercolor Society, the Asian Museum of Watercolor Art, and the Springfield Art Museum all have collections of his work.
Both John Salminen's undergraduate and graduate degrees in art are from the University of Minnesota. In Duluth, Minnesota, he resides and works. John presents, gives courses, and takes part in exhibitions and painting competitions all over the world.
The American Watercolor Society's Dolphin Fellowship, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America's Distinguished Master are just a few of the American art societies that John is a signature member of. He has held board positions in the TWSA and the American Watercolor Society, respectively. In national and international exhibitions, John has won more than 250 prizes, including the AWS Gold Medal twice, the Silver Star First Place Award in the National Watercolor Society Exhibition twice, the Gold and Silver Medal in Allied Artists of America, and the first place prize three times from the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. around addition to a number of modest group exhibitions, he has held 34 one-person shows around the country.
John serves as the President of the Shanghai-based International Masters of Watercolor Association and is a prominent figure in both China and Australia. He is the first American to receive membership in the Australian Watercolour Institute and an honorary member of the Jiangsu Watercolor Research Institute in China. John has won numerous honors, including the Thailand Ministry of Culture and the Arts medal, the Pakistan Lifetime Achievement medal, and the Shanghai Biennial Award. In addition to China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Russia, Greece, Mexico, Pakistan, Canada, Italy, England, Belgium, Equador, and Australia, he has taken part in fifty-seven invitation-only international exhibitions.
John's work can be found in several private and business collections all over the world as well as in numerous permanent collections in Asia and Europe.
John has participated in over 90 national and international shows as a jury member or judge. Numerous articles about his work have appeared in eight top national and international journals, as well as 42 books published in the US, Europe, Australia, Russia, and Asia. North Light Books released John Salminen Master of the Urban Landscape, a retrospective book of his artwork. Two instructional DVDs, Abstraction Through Design and Realism Through Design, were released by Creative Catalyst. He is presently collaborating with Streamline and Creative Catalyst on a new DVD that combines abstraction and realism.
