빠르고 대담한 붓질로 질감을 표현하는 화가, '요제프 코테'는, 알바니아 최고의 대학에서 그림공부를 하면서도 늘 우물 안 개구리 같은 한계를 느끼며 새로운 도전을 꿈꾸고 있었습니다. 그러던 26세 때 좀 더 넓은 세상인, 바로 옆나라 그리스로 이주했습니다.

 

이때부터 그의 삶은 유목민적 패턴이 시작되었죠. 그리스로 옮겨가서 10년, 캐나다 토론토에서 또 10년, 지금은 뉴욕에서 15년째 살고 있습니다. 이렇게 세계 곳곳을 옮겨 다닐 때마다 그의 그림도 지역의 환경에 따라 진화했습니다.

 

그리스에서는 역사적인 사실주의 작품과 함께 지중해의 맑은 햇빛과 파란 바다가 화면 가득했었는데, 캐나다에서는 하얀 눈과 가을 단풍이 단골 소재였답니다. 그리고 뉴욕에서는 도시의 화려함과 생생함, 고층건물의 대각선 구도가 특징입니다. 그는 빛과 색채와 구도를 조합하는 방법을 잘 알고 있는 화가입니다.

Josef Kote’s work has been exhibited in the United States, and internationally, for over 30 years. His practice is an interplay of balance and equilibrium between polarities: between realism and abstraction, between classical and experimental techniques. It is the happy outcome of an artistic figure who has had a diverse range of experiences, resulting in a multi-layered personality that shines through in his work: "Every piece that I've painted, every stroke and color, tells a story of my experimentation, resilience, and perseverance." You only have to look at one of Kote's acrylic seascapes to grasp the depth of emotions and experiences behind his artwork. His seascapes are intricately layered compositions that seamlessly blend two different visions into one. They are a reflection of the many different sensibilities that exist within a single life.
