스위스에서 태어난 '미셸 레만'은, 자라면서 그림을 공부한 적도 없었고, 예술가가 될 생각도 전혀 없었습니다. 30대 중반에 스페인의 어느 광장에서 수공예품 가게를 운영하기 시작했죠. 그 가게 앞을 매일같이 지나다니는 검은 옷의 한 할머니를 보고 그림을 그리고 싶어 졌답니다.

 

하지만 할머니가 너무 빨라 연필이 따라잡을 수 없었고, 하는 수없이 뒷모습을 그렸답니다. 이렇게 완성한 그녀의 작품은 하루 만에 팔렸고, 그녀 가게는 차츰 미술관으로 바뀌었답니다. 얼굴 없는 뒷모습의 그림에는 상상의 여지가 충분합니다.

 

단순한 형태와 그러데이션이 잘 된 색상 톤의 그녀 작품을 감상하다 보면, 굳이 얼굴을 보지 않더라도 타인의 삶을 상상하고 관찰하는 관객의 입장이 되는군요.
