Thierry Duval, Paris, Artist, 1957~Present

Thierry Duval studied decorative arts and graduated in 1982. He is an illustrator and a creative for a sizable advertising firm in Paris. Beginning in 1980, he will start making his first works employing the narrative comic strip approach for a few fanzines and magazines. A renowned Italian restaurant in Paris named "Raffaelo" ordered replicas of Raffael's pastel paintings from the Renaissance; perhaps then it would have the same appeal as the great masters of academic painting.

He came across the paintings of painter Delacroix while getting ready for the opening of the Decorative Arts in Paris, which sparked his interest in watercolor. This method will provide us a lot of creative freedom. But unlike typical watercolors, he approaches the medium differently, and in his work, a power manifests itself in unexpected hues and lighting. Depending on the theme, its goal is to conjure a "impressionism" of dawn or dusk, all while being backed by a highly accurate drawing. All of these elements give Thierry Duval's aquarelles evocative strength and a level of realism not typically found in watercolor expression.

Paris and the East are two crucial places to find inspiration

As Delacroix traveled to Morocco for his works, it depicts a variety of issues for the East, including men and their lifestyles. Berbère has a lovely journey but a hard environment that is illuminated by warm light. His watercolors resemble the Orientalistes, who also contributed to the realism of the subjects in Majorelle's paintings.

Regarding the subject of his work, Paris, he wants to capture the sounds of the city, barges, markets, and cafés, as well as the early morning light on the Seine, the light below decks, rooftops that are shining in the rain, the silhouettes of imposing monuments that appeared at an alleyway turn, and the light filtering through decks. He enjoys watching these lonesome onlookers on the Pont des Arts and taking in the autumnal atmosphere of Paris. His art is nourished and inspired by this photography work, which results in the eternal reality of a dreamy Paris.

The paradox between a high tech modernity (caused by digital technology and its many uses) and, on the other hand, a pictorial record that refers to influential relatively large watercolorist classics of the previous century, is what makes his work unique.

The artwork of Thierry Duval is a deft combination of hyperrealism, poetry, and elegance. He is a worthy heir to the great British legacy of watercolor, which includes William Turner, Thomas Shotter Boys, William Callow, and James Holland. Thierry Duval is a perceptive and exact observer of the city and the natural world, paying close attention to even the smallest changes in light. His watercolors of urban settings capture the charm of old Paris as well as its strange and enigmatic side.

Since 2007, he has held shows in Palo Alto, California, in the United States. More recently, he has taken part in a number of exhibitions in France and other countries. chosen for the largest watercolor exhibition in Europe, the 11th Biennale de Namur, to take place in 2009.
