미국 뉴욕에서 태어난 '다인 칼슨'은 정물화로 유명한 화가입니다. 아주 오래된 놋쇠 그릇, 중국풍의 차 주전자, 도자기 등을 매우 고풍스럽고 정밀하게 그렸습니다.

 

어릴 적 학교는 다니지 않고, 덴마크에서 미국으로 이주해 온 부모님으로부터 홈스쿨링을 받았습니다. 뛰어난 정물화가였던 아버지 '에밀 칼센'에게서 미술수업을 받았죠. 그래서 아버지와 아들의 작품은 매우 흡사합니다.

 

아들 '다인 칼슨'이 죽고 난 후, 그의 아내는 칼슨 부자를 추모하기 위해 '에밀과 다인 칼슨 상 Emil and Dines Carlsen Award'을 제정해, 매년 정물화가에게 시상하고 있답니다.

Emil Carlsen, also known as Soren Emil Carlsen, was a American artist born in 1853 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was associated with American Impressionism, Tonal Impressionism, California Tonalism, French Impressionism, and Tonalism, and he specialized in painting still lifes, landscapes, and seascapes. Carlsen once said, "... still life painting is considered of small importance in the Art schools, both here and abroad, the usual course being drawn from the antique, the nude, and painting the draped figure and from the nude. ... Then why should the earnest student overlook the simplest and most thorough way of acquiring all the knowledge of the craft of painting and drawing, the study of inanimate objects, still life painting, the very surest road to absolute mastery over all technical difficulties." He was educated at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen.

 

His work was influenced by artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and Lauritz Holst, and he was a peer of Julian Alden Weir, John Twachtman, and Childe Hassam. Carlsen received numerous accolades, including the Samuel T. Shaw Purchase Prize, the Gold Medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the Shaw Prize, and the Medal of Honor at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. He passed away in 1932 in New York City, New York, USA. His works are exhibited in numerous institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dayton Art Institute, the Akron Art Museum, the De Young Museum, the Bohemian Club, the National Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Historical Society, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Montclair Art Museum, the Nashville Parthenon, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Oakland Museum of California, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Frye Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Butler Art Institute, the Columbus Museum, the Bruce Museum, and the El Paso Museum of Art.
