About Him
Georges Dufrénoy is a painter who only cares about painting. He does not seek to build a personality for himself. He is not dominated by any of the trends that guide French painting. Although he admires great artists like Cézanne, Van Gogh, Renoir or Gauguin, he does not place himself in their continuity.
He began painting in the studio of Désiré Laugée, aged fourteen. He discovered his own style following his travels in Italy and his encounter with Venetian masterpieces. He made admirable copies of the works of Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese. He thus developed his taste for rich painting, art being for him the height of luxury.
Joachim Gasquet, an art critic, says of Dufrénoy that he is “ a painter above all. An organism, like Monticelli, entirely constructed to gorge itself on the color of things, to intoxicate itself and intoxicate others. He impasts lyrical facades. He cements juxtaposed tones. He builds light.” Katia Granoff takes pleasure in comparing him to Delacroix. According to her, both have a horror of realism and exactitude because “ without an ideal, there is neither painting, nor drawing, nor color.” In addition, they approach a certain modesty towards their paintings. They leave them aside for a few years before exhibiting them and when that day comes, a feeling of nudity overwhelms them.
Thus, Dufrénoy creates paintings that resemble an ideal world, filled with a moving beauty in which he invites us to participate. His art is filled with sensitivity that is nevertheless embodied in many varied and subtle forms. He paints what he likes in his solitude without worrying about the theories that make the Parisian art scene of his time buzz. Thus his dreams ennoble reality to enchant the spectator.
