문학과 미술을 전공한 미국의 '마일즈 하이먼'은, 그의 할머니가 쓴 단편소설 "The Lottery (1948년 작)"를 그래픽 소설로 각색하여 재출판한 화가입니다. 소설의 행간에 담긴 의미와 단어의 뉘앙스를 시각적으로 잘 살려서 좋은 반응을 얻었죠.

 

그는 미국의 사실주의와 유럽의 상징주의 작품의 영향을 많이 받았지만, 누아르 영화 등에서도 영향을 받아 스토리가 풍부한  'Narrative Image'를 그립니다. 그리고 그는 루이비통과의 협업으로 "로마"의 이미지를 책으로 펴내기도 했습니다.

 

트레비 분수와 콜로세움 등 도시의 역사적 아름다움을 높은 채도의 일러스트로 그려냈죠. 자동차 사고를 소재로 한 "Crash 시리즈" 작품에는 수수께끼 같은 이야기들이 물감 속에 진하게 녹아있는 듯합니다.

Miles Hyman was born in Vermont in 1962, and currently lives and works in Paris. Hyman studied drawing and printmaking with David Schorr at Wesleyan University in Connecticut before attending Paris’ Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His works have been exhibited in museums including the Palais de Tokyo, the Glénat Foundation, Rome’s Institute of Graphic Arts, and the French Musée de l’Illustration. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture. Hyman’s drawings are featured by international publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Viking, Farrar Straus & Giroux, Gallimard, and Chronicle Books. His work has also appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Futuropolis, and a specially commissioned project with Louis Vuitton to illustrate Louis Vuitton Travel Book: Rome.
