“풀밭 위의 점심”을 살롱전에 출품한 ‘마네’는 거센 비난을 받았지만, 이 작품으로 자신의 이름을 알리기 시작했습니다. 하지만 "올랭피아"로 또다시 물의를 일으키죠.

 

'고야'에게서 영감을 얻어 '마네'가 그린 작품은, 한국전쟁 때 '피카소'에게까지 작품의 의미가 이어졌습니다. 몽마르트 근처의 “카페에서” 작품은, 그리다가 맘에 안 들었는지 멀쩡한 그림을 칼로 잘라 두 작품으로 나누어 그리기도 했답니다.

 

언젠가 ‘드가’가 마네 부부를 그려왔는데, 피아노 치는 아내 부분이 맘에 안든다고 그것도 일부분을 찢어버리기도 했죠. 마네의 마지막 작품, “폴리 베르제르의 술집"은 1869년 개업하여 아직도 영업중인 극장식 주점입니다. 맨 왼쪽 술은 'manet 1882'라는 사인과 함께 키핑해두었네요.

Manet was the elder statesman of the Impressionists, although he never participated in their exhibitions but continued to compete in the Salons. His unconventional subject matter drawn from modern life, and his concern for the artist's freedom in handling paint made him an important precursor of Impressionism.

 

Manet was a native Parisian and the son of wealthy parents. He trained with Thomas Couture. His work was founded on the opposition of light and shadow, a restricted palette in which black was very important, and on painting directly from the model. The work of the Spaniard Velázquez directly influenced his adoption of this style.

 

In Paris he associated with avant-garde writers, notably Baudelaire, who appears in 'The Music in the Tuileries Gardens'. Manet's work became famous at the Salon des Refusés, the exhibition of paintings rejected by the official Salon. In 1863 and 1867 he held one-man exhibitions. In the 1870s, under the influence of Monet and Renoir, he produced landscapes and street scenes directly inspired by Impressionism. He remained reluctant to exhibit with the Impressionists, and sought the approval of the Salon all his life.
