베를린에서 태어난 '가브리엘레 뮌터'는 24살이던 1901년, 뮌헨의 미술학교에서 '칸딘스키'를 처음 만났습니다. 하지만 그는 이미 러시아에서 결혼한 유부남. 그래도 그들은 바이에른의 작은 마을 '무르나우 Murnau'에서 함께 살기 시작했습니다.

                                                                                              About Her

 

Gabriele Münter, born on February 19, 1877 in Berlin, came from a family originally from Westphalia; her parents had lived in America as emigrants before her birth. After a short period of study at a Düsseldorf drawing school, she traveled through America with her sister from 1898 to 1900. In 1901 she came to Munich to study art and in early 1902 became a student at Wassily Kandinsky's newly founded "Phalanx" art school. In 1903 the two formed a living and working partnership. Since Kandinsky was still married, he and Münter traveled for several years, including living in Sèvres near Paris for almost a year. It was not until 1908 that they returned permanently to Munich, and at the same time discovered Murnau in the Bavarian Alpine foothills as their favorite place to paint. Gabriele Münter bought a house here in 1909, and they spent many months together in Murnau, which were among the most productive of their careers.

 

In 1909, Münter and Kandinsky became members of the "New Artists' Association Munich", whose members included Alexej Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, Adolf Erbslöh, Alexander Kanoldt and later Franz Marc. In 1911, she left the "New Artists' Association Munich" with Kandinsky and Marc and took part in the first exhibition of the "Blue Rider" in the winter of 1911/12, as well as in all subsequent exhibitions of the group. In the period from 1908 to 1914, Münter's artistic strengths, her ability to simplify and her accurate drawing style, came to full fruition. Reduction of forms and clear color contrasts also characterize the portraits of her artist friends, which Münter captured in famous paintings; she included folk art objects and reverse glass painting in her still lifes.

 

After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Münter initially went to Switzerland with Kandinsky, but in November of that year they separated in Zurich and Kandinsky returned to his Russian homeland. In the early summer of 1915, Münter moved to Stockholm to meet up with his companion in a neutral country, and in the winter of 1915/16 they saw each other here for the last time. Münter remained in Scandinavia until 1920, most recently in Copenhagen. The following decade was characterized by an unsettled life of wandering in Germany, during which time Münter worked primarily as a draftswoman. In 1930 she and her second partner Johannes Eichner settled permanently in their house in Murnau, where she lived and worked until her death on May 19, 1962.
