런펑멘(Lin Fengmian, 林風眠), 중국, 화가, 1900-1991
중국 화가 '린펑멘'은 동양과 서양 스타일을 혼합한 중국 현대회화의 선구자였습니다. 아버지가 화가였기에 유럽으로 유학도 다녀왔죠. 하지만 그의 삶과 작품은 시대적 비극을 맞았습니다.
초기 작품은 청일전쟁 중 일본군에 의해 손실되었고, 후기 작품들은 문화혁명 때 심한 비판을 받으며 화장실 변기 속으로 버려졌습니다. 그 자신도 4년 넘게 감옥에 있다가, 석방된 후에 예전의 작품들을 다시 그리기 시작했답니다.
70살도 훨씬 넘은 후에야 그는 중국을 떠날 수 있었고, 홍콩에서 살았습니다. 그가 즐겨 다룬 작품 소재는, 경극 (Peking Opera)의 주인공들과 새, 그리고 자연 풍경들이었습니다. 또한 파리에서 만난 예술가들의 영향을 받아, 그의 작품 속에는 모딜리아니 스타일의 여인도 있고, 모네를 닮은 연꽃도 있죠. 뿐만 아니라 마티스의 색감도, 피카소의 입체파 리듬도 나타납니다.
About Him
Lin Fengmian was a pioneering Chinese painter known for his merging of Western and Eastern painting styles to depict landscapes, elegant women, and birds. Lin’s paintings are characterized by the hallmarks of traditional Chinese painting’s perspectival and stylistic ink brush techniques, while also utilizing the impasto, colors, and boldness of Expressionistic European painters like Henri Matisse. A highly influential figure in China’s modern painting movements, he went on to teach Zao Wou-Ki, Wu Guanzhong, and other renown artists. Born on November 22, 1900 in Guangdong, China, he spent the early years of his career in Paris and Berlin studying painting in the early 1920s. Drawing on these various influences, his figures are often set against a monochromatic background of ink wash and line drawing, creating a dynamic and brightly colored composition. Unfortunately, when Lin returned to China he was caught in the conflicts of the Sino-Japanese War and the Cultural Revolution, during which much of his work was destroyed. Lin spent the last years of his life living in Hong Kong, attempting to recreate the paintings that had been lost. He died on August 12, 1991 in Hong Kong, China.
