영국 '테리 프로스트' 경은 추상미술을 이끈 화가입니다. 2차 대전 때 특공대원으로 참전했다가 포로가 되고 말았죠. 하지만 포로수용소에서 화가를 만나 그림을 배우기 시작했답니다. 페인트를 얻어다 정어리 통조림에서 나온 기름을 섞고, 말 털로 만든 붓으로 수용소 포로들의 초상화를 그렸죠.

 

전쟁이 끝난 후 예술대학에 입학하여 정식으로 그림 공부를 시작했습니다. 추상적인 스타일의 작품에는 해안선과 보트, 태양 등이 리듬과 균형을 가지고 배치되어 있네요. 서로 대비되는 다양한 색감과 독특한 구도가 돋보이는 작품들입니다.

Terry Frost helped pioneer the development of British Abstract art in the mid-20th century. His nested geometric forms and electric palettes of tonal blues and lavenders, and dappled oranges and pinks earned him a key place in the country’s abstract movement. Frost began painting while a prisoner of war alongside the painter Adrian Heath, who encouraged him to pursue art. He arrived at abstraction under the tutelage of artists Victor Pasmore, Ben Nicholson, and William Coldstream while studying at the Camberwell College of Arts and would continue to hone his craft while exhibiting with the St. Ives Society of Artists. Frost’s aesthetic, informed by the coastal landscape of his native Cornwall, combines hard-edged geometric planes with gestural strokes and dappled pointillism. He exhibited widely during his lifetime and showed at institutions including the Hermitage Museum, the ICA London, the Brooklyn Museum, the Tate St. Ives, and the British Council in New York.
