남아프리카에서 태어나고 자라다가, 지금은 호주에서 살고 있는 '멜 브리그'는 서른살 쯤에 독학으로 그림을 공부했습니다. 그는 아프리카와 호주의 넓은 자연에서 영감을 얻어, 평화의 메시지가 담긴 그림을 그리는 작가입니다. 빛의 원근감과 무거운 질감을 살려 서정적인 분위기로 완성시킨 작품들입니다.

Mel Brigg’s allegorical landscape paintings are populated with metaphorical imagery of people traversing the globe in search of unknowable things. Seamlessly blending textural and drip-like abstractions with figurative imagery, paintings such as Exodus and Arrivals bear a resemblance to those of Mark Tansey, whose grisaille images play with the conventions of narrative and representation. Born and raised in Apartheid South Africa before moving to Australia, Brigg is deeply devoted to the well-being of people and the planet, a commitment evident in his work. In Moon Passage, he skillfully re-creates the reflection of moonlight on a fantastically exaggerated plane over which a small group of people progress toward the glowing celestial body. Speaking of the recurring circles and orbs in his images, he says, “It highlights that person, his feelings of angst, arriving in a new strange land, and being different, as if in the spotlight, and being scrutinized by the locals.”
