About Him
Rob Browning’s unique contemporary surrealist paintings of human figures, landscapes, and architecture often depict quiet, slightly unsettling scenes of suburban life. His work often plays with shadow, producing crafty illusions and silhouettes that contrast with the richly colored motifs in his paintings. Rows of fluffy white clouds set into relief by cerulean skies figure heavily in Browning’s works; his paintings capture an idealized version of reality, albeit one distorted by supernatural events and bizarre juxtapositions. In Stilts and Fog (2021), for instance, a young child is shown on a pair of stilts that are so tall that he appears to be standing just above a thick bank of fog. Just behind him the peak of a house is visible, and thunderheads loom in the distant background. Browning has participated in exhibitions at galleries in Atlanta, Chicago, and New Orleans.
