안자이 미즈마루(安西水丸), 일본, 삽화가, 1942-2014
‘안자이 미즈마루’는 ‘무라카미 하루키 (村上春樹 1949~ )’와 운명적으로 만나 30년간 예술적 동반자로 같이 작업했습니다. 자신이 손꼽은 베스트 그림은, ‘하루키’가 철인 3종경기에서 달리는 모습으로, 잡지 표지를 장식했습니다.
그림에서 보듯이 그는 ‘대충’ 그리는 스타일입니다. 무성의하고 나태한 게 아니라 ‘힘을 뺀 상태’의 그림들이죠. 하루키는 ‘딱 한 번이라도 좋으니 안자이씨가 그림 때문에 고심하는 꼴을 보고 싶다’라고 에세이에 쓸 정도였습니다.
그런 그의 작품을 ‘하루키’는 “마음을 다해 대충 그린 그림”이라고 얘기합니다.
About Him
Illustrator Mizumaru Anzai was born in Tokyo in 1942. After graduating from Nihon University with a concentration in design, he worked as art director at Dentsu, the ADAC design studio in New York, and Heibonsha before going freelance.
He received the following awards:
・Asahi Advertising Award
・Mainichi Advertising Design Award
・Japan Graphic Arts Show “Outstanding Artist of the Year Award” (1987)
・Kinema Junpo “Readers’ Choice Award” (1988)
He wrote numerous picture books, manga, essays, stories, etc., including: the short story collection “Amaryllis,” the illustrated essay anthology “Oishii ka koishii ka” [Delicious or Beloved], and the translated works “Manatsu no kokai” (Truman Capote’s “Summer Crossing”) and “Harry’s Bar” (Arrigo Cipriani). Mr. Anzai was a member of the Tokyo Illustrators Society, Japan Graphic Designers Association, The Japan Writers’ Assocation and The Japan P.E.N. Club; he also served as chairman of both the Japan Snowdome Association and Curry Rice Association. He passed away on March 19, 2014, aged 71.
