About Him
Tomás Sánchez (Cuban, b.1948) is a painter best known for his detailed and idealized landscapes. He studied at the San Alejandro School of Plastic Arts in Havana and at the National School of Art. Sánchez’s style is often compared to the work of Caspar David Friedrich and the Hudson River School, but his meticulous attention to detail distinguishes his own style. Expansive landscapes such as Orilla En La Noche Clara (1993) depicts a forest, illuminated by moonlight, down to the last leaf.
His landscapes are always pristine and devoid of human presence, giving his work an otherworldly quality. Sánchez received the Joan Miró Prize in 1980 and the Amelia Peláez Award in 1984 for his work in Havana’s first Biennial. His work has been exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Art in Havana, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Galería Expoarte in Panama City. He lives and works in Miami, FL, and Costa Rica.
