노르웨이에서 지주의 딸로 태어난 ' 베치 아커슬룻 버그'는 바다 풍경을 그리는 화가입니다. 학교를 졸업한 후 처음엔 북쪽 라플란드에 사는 사미족을 위해 간호사로 일하다가, 25살 무렵에 오슬로로 돌아와 그림을 그리기 시작했습니다.

 

결혼 후엔 프리란트 섬에서 거의 대부분을 지내며 그곳의 바다와 파도, 하늘과 구름을 그렸답니다. 갯벌도, 고래의 흔적도 기록했습니다. 1차 대전 중에는 해변에 떠내려와 폭발하는 지뢰와 섬을 지나가는 독일 비행선 제플린 Zeppelin을 그리기도 했죠.

 

그녀는 늘 해변에 앉아 바다를 스케치했는데, 커다란 나무상자 안에서 매서운 바람을 막으며 그림에 열중했답니다. 멀리서도 자신의 위치를 쉽게 알 수 있도록 빨간 깃발을 단 나무상자는, 그녀가 편안하게 그림을 그리던 아틀리에였답니다.

Betzy Berg was born in 1850, in Aurskog, Norway, about 50 km east of Oslo. After finishing school, she worked for a long time as a nurse and evangelist among the Sami in Lapland. Reminders of that time include her skis, a backpack and a pair of boots made of braided birch bark and a walking stick with Sami characters, on display in the museum's salon. At the age of about 25, she returned to Oslo to devote herself to her passion for drawing and painting. At this time, there were few opportunities for women painters to receive education. Betzy took a number of courses at the Royal Academy of Drawing and received private education. In 1881 she settled in Munich to study with the artist Otto Sinding. In 1885 she came into contact with Mesdag's work, which fascinated her by his technique and styles and in particular by the way he painted the sea. She contacted Hendrick Willem Mesdag in Scheveningen and was accepted as a student.

 

In the museum's salon, works from Mesdag's period with the clear and recognizable influence of the Hague School are on display. In the garden room of the museum you can see some of the paintings she made on Vlieland, where the use of light and bright colors stands out, she experimented with different techniques and colors and she painted the way she wanted.

 

Betzy called herself a marine painter, as was also mentioned on her tombstone in the Vlieland cemetery after her death in 1922. Much of her work has historical value as well as artistic value. She painted Vlieland as it was here a century ago; the sea and the mudflats with ships, the Richel with seals, the houses and the dunes. But she also painted the Zeppelin raids on London in 1917 and exploding sea mines on the beach! Kees Bangma wrote an article about Betzy's painting of the journey of Zeppelins over Vlieland in the First World War.

 

Betzy Akersloot-Berg has developed an oeuvre of more than 300 paintings, drawings and prints, many of which are managed by the museum. There is still a lot to tell and see about this special lady; On Thursday mornings you can take part in the Striking Monuments Walk, in which the story of Betzy plays an important role.
