프랑스의 '줄스 르프랑'은 10대 때에 '모네'를 만난 적이 있었는데, 재능이 있으니 계속해서 그림을 그리라는 격려를 받았답니다.

 

그 후 독학으로 그림을 그리기는 했으나, 사회생활을 시작하고 조선업 관련 사업을 하면서는 전혀 그림 그릴 시간을 내지 못했죠.

 

마흔 살 이후에는 아예 사업을 접고, 본격적으로 미술에 전념했답니다. 그의 작품에서는 수직선이 많이 강조되고, 기하학적 구성이 특징이랍니다.

Jules Lefranc grew up in his father's hardware store, tried his hand at painting in the years 1902-1906, and continued his commercial activity until 1928. From then on, he devoted himself definitively to painting.

 

He lived in Paris, in the Belleville district, sometimes returned to his native city and settled, at the end of his life, in Les Sables-d'Olonne where he died in 1972, leaving a considerable body of work of nearly a thousand paintings.

 

Numerous travels gave him the opportunity to paint the landscapes and monuments that struck him: the Château de Josselin or the many variants of Mont-Saint-Michel that we know of him. But it is above all the evocations of old Laval, characteristic of his way of painting, that we find in the paintings that Louis Aragon described as follows: "He is first and foremost the painter of Laval and other cities where the same French sweetness, under the softness of the roofs like a pigeon's plumage, marries to the old stones the shops and the colorful signs of today." He is also the painter of the sea and things of the sea, around La Chaume and the port of Les Sables-d'Olonne or on the Atlantic coast. An important part of his work is devoted to them: the pier, the buoy, the thousand shades of water recur again and again in most of his paintings, the most famous of which is the Launch of the Normandie, made in 1933.
