Vladimir Kush, Russian, American, Sculpture, March 1965
Vladimir Kush is an American painter, jewelry designer, and sculptor who was born in Russia in 1965. He graduated from the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, and after spending some time working as an artist in his home city of Moscow, he immigrated to the US. He finally opened his own gallery on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Due to his popularity and the subsequent opening of more galleries in Laguna Beach, Las Vegas, and Miami, Florida, he also sells his oil paintings as giclée prints. The artist has assimilated into American culture and is now an inspiration to others. The majority of his sales are prints, making him the only Russian artist in the US with his own gallery. Receiving the prestigious Artiste du Monde prize in Cannes in 2012 from Marina Picasso brought about recognition throughout Europe.
Kush was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1965. He completed his education at the Surikov Moscow Art Institute before being drafted for two years into the Soviet Army, where he was tasked with creating murals. He started showing with the USSR Union of Artists in 1987, but he made a living by caricaturing for newspapers and drawing people's faces on the streets of Moscow. He immigrated to the United States in 1990 after his first overseas show in Germany with two other Russian artists. He initially resided in Los Angeles before relocating to Hawaii, where he also worked as a mural painter at the Whaler's Village Museum on Maui. His sculptures were featured in numerous shows at Hong Kong galleries when he was based there. He then held exhibition openings in Pittsburgh, Seattle, and other American cities before establishing his own gallery, Kush Fine Art, in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Later, he established Kush Fine Art galleries in California's Laguna Beach and Las Vegas. His reputation was first boosted by the fact that many of his original oil paintings are also offered as giclée prints. When images from his painting (and later giclée print), Contes Erotiques, was utilized without his permission for her 2006 video U + Ur Hand, Kush sued Pink and her record label in 2007 for copyright infringement. The next year, after the artist agreed to pay him secret damages, the matter was resolved. Along with his works held in private collections, Kush also has prints and an original oil painting in the NaPua Gallery collection at the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui. He got the American First Prize in Painting at the Artistes du Monde international exhibition in Cannes in July 2011. He also performs regularly at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ariana Grande's music video for "God is a woman" allegedly included Kush's paintings The Candle and The Candle 2 without his consent, prompting Kush to file a lawsuit against the pop singer. The action was filed for copyright infringement. The case has finally been resolved.
