인도 화가 '암리타 셰르길'은 20세기 초 인도의 아방가르드 예술가 중 한 명입니다. 아버지는 인도의 귀족이었고, 어머니는 헝가리의 오페라 가수였기에, 그녀는 헝가리에서 태어났습니다.

 

어릴 때부터 음악과 미술에 소질이 있어 파리에서도 미술공부를 하며 인정받았죠. 하지만 자신의 예술에 한계를 느껴 인도로 돌아갔고, 이후 동양과 서양의 감성이 혼합된 그녀 자신의 스타일이 완성되었답니다.

 

그녀가 표현하는 작품 속 여성은 우울하면서도 침묵의 결의가 담겨있고, 인도 아잔타 동굴의 벽화처럼 깊은 톤으로 묘사되어 있습니다. 오늘날 인도 여성 화가의 작품 중에서도 특별히 가치 있는 작품들이지만, 그녀가 살아있을 때 작품을 인정한 사람은 거의 없었답니다.

Amrita Sher-Gil was a Hungarian-Indian painter. She has been called "one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century" and a "pioneer" in modern Indian art. Drawn to painting from an early age, Sher-Gil started getting formal lessons in the art, at the age of eight. She first gained recognition at the age of 19, for her oil painting titled Young Girls. Sher-Gil traveled throughout her life to various countries including Turkey, France, and India, deriving heavily from precolonial Indian art styles and its current culture. Sher-Gil is considered an important painter of 20th-century India, whose legacy stands on a level with that of the pioneers from the Bengal Renaissance. She was also an avid reader and a pianist. Sher-Gil's paintings are among the most expensive by Indian women painters today, although few acknowledged her work when she was alive.
